SAINT LOUIS SCOTT GALLAGHER

Luebbert Signs!

sjernigan • Jun 15, 2021

St. Louis, Mo. – Former St. Louis Scott Gallagher (SLSG) and University of Missouri Soccer player Sarah Luebbert, has been signed to the roster of the Chicago Red Stars for the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Challenge Cup, the organization announced on Tuesday. The NWSL is the highest women's soccer league in the United States, and is considered one of the best women's soccer leagues in the world. The 23-game, eight-team return-to-play tournament will be held outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, and will be held June 27-July 26.

Luebbert is, and will always be, one of SLSG’s greatest stories. When Sarah first joined the club during her U13 season, she was placed on SLSG Black, a club level team. After performing well that season, Luebbert began to climb up the club’s pyramid, playing on Premier Navy at U14, and at U15 became a member of the club’s ECNL Program. Sarah played four years for the 97/98 ECNL team before graduating from Jeff City High early to join Mizzou in January of 2017. Luebbert ended her career with the Tigers ranked in the top 10 in the career record book for goals (29, T-7th), assists (21, T-8th), game-winning goals (8, T-7th) and points (79, 8th). She was named to the United Soccer Coaches all-region teams three times, and was a four-time All-SEC selection.

Director of Coaching and ECNL Coach, Scott McDoniel, had this to say about Luebbert. “I think I speak for everyone in the club when I say I’m just so proud and impressed with what Sarah has accomplished since joining the club ten (10) years ago. She is humble, determined, intelligent, and works incredibly hard. Honestly, I’m just so happy for the entire family. Her parents Jerry and Dianne are super people, and incredibly dedicated. Thinking back, Sarah (much like her younger sister Izzy Luebbert, now playing for SLSG 03 ECNL) rarely missed training or games even though she lived over two (2) hours away in Jeff City, a reflection of her commitment and her family's passion for the game. And as an added bonus, Sarah will be joining another one of our all-time greatest, Alyssa Mautz (St. Louis SC/SLSG 1997-2007 and seven year verteran for the Red Stars), who will be a great role model. This is all just really exciting!”

Luebbert was one of 28 players announced on the Chicago Red Stars roster for the National Women's Soccer League's Challenge Cup, the NWSL's restart from the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament will be held outside of Salt Lake City and run from Saturday to Sunday, July 26. Games will be live-streamed on CBS All Access and rebroadcast on CBS Sports Network. Chicago opens the tournament at 9 p.m. Saturday against the Washington Spirit, and plays the Portland Thorns at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 1. The Red Stars face defending NWSL champs NC Courage July 5 at 9:30 a.m. and finish their round-robin play against Utah Royals FC July 12 at 7 p.m.

SLSG’s Missouri ECNL RL Program has just concluded the Regional League Showcase in Sanford Florida this past weekend. The program brought three teams to participate in the showcase consisting of the 04/05, 06, and 07 age groups. This was a great opportunity for the players to compete with different teams from across the country and showcase their abilities to a number of various college programs totalling over 200 in attendance at the event. The three teams landed in Sanford on Thursday and each had one game on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Following the Friday slate of games our teams were able to watch the ECNL RL National Selection game in which Anna Beam (04/05) had the chance to represent SLSG and compete with the top players in the Regional League. Anna’s team was coached by SLSG’s RL Director and Coach Maggie Richard. Anna and Maggie came away with a 4-2 win on the night with all 3 of our age groups in attendance to support. The 04/05 age group had a great weekend with 3 wins over the 3 day span. On Thursday they battled to a 1-0 win over PWSI with an abundance of colleges in attendance on the day. They took the momentum into Saturday with a 2-0 win over FC Prime, and capped off the trip with a 3-2 win against FC Delco. It was a great sendoff for our senior class and the team was able to celebrate with a senior dinner on Saturday night to cap off the RL season. Over the course of the weekend the team was able to showcase their abilities individually and as a team. The 06 age group was able to come away with a 1-1-1 record on the trip, starting with a 2-2 draw over Susa FC off a last minute equalizer to steal a point on the opening day. On Saturday the group attempted to battle their way back against a 3-1 deficit and finished the game with a 3-2 loss against Alabama FC. They ended the trip on a high note beating Match Fit Academy 3-0 on Sunday. It was an overall successful weekend for the 06 age group. The 07 age group were unlucky to come out of the weekend with a draw and 2 losses. Facing 3 tough opponents during the showcase the group was unfortunate not to come away with a win, but showed they are able to compete with top teams and look forward to the playoffs this summer following the high school season. Overall it was a great experience for the players to experience such a special event put on by the ECNL. We would like to thank all the families and players for their commitment to the program this season and for making it such a great experience for everyone. We wish all of our players good luck this high school season.
