SAINT LOUIS SCOTT GALLAGHER

SLSG MO ECNL Girls Excel On-and-Off the Field

sjernigan • Jun 14, 2021

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – St. Louis Scott Gallagher caught up with members of the 1999 MO ECNL girls team which recently celebrated nine high school seniors who are continuing their student-athlete careers after committing to colleges on National Signing Day.

The class of 2018 was tabbed for greatness at the U15 level when they were the first SLSG team to qualify for the ECNL Champions League National Playoffs. After the birth year changes took effect at U17 level, the girls went undefeated for 25 games going into the ECNL Champions League National Playoffs and won the first Midwest Regional Conference title in 2016. As U18 players, the girls qualified with the 1998 birth year girls for the ECNL National Finals and finished the season ranked 5th in the country. This past year as U19 players, the girls won the Midwest Regional Conference title and finished the season 17-0-0 and will compete in the ECNL National Finals as the #1 seed.

Anna Lawler (Oklahoma State University) was one of the girls who went undefeated the season before the birth year rule took effect. “Last year we were undefeated but this season I would say it’s been easier because we had more time together after the birth year change and we feel really comfortable around each other,” said Lawler.

In addition to performances on the field, the class of 2018 girls have exceled off the field with their community involvement. Every year since 2015, the girls have completed an Upper90 community service project with organizations such as Marygrove’s Christmas Angels (2015), Food Outreach-St. Louis (2016), North Grand Neighborhood Services (2017), SPENSA (2017) and Missouri Baptist Medical Center (2018).

Gaby Smith (Butler University) has been with the club for six years and believes those community projects have helped the team on the field as well. “While at SLSG, I’ve learned to give back to the community and really enjoyed being with my teammates at those community projects,” said Smith.

Margaret Lavigne (University of Omaha) thinks that time balance between school, playing soccer, and helping in the community has prepared her for the college environment. “The club has taught me the value of hard work and stepping up to face any challenge,” said Lavigne. “Also, prioritizing my time and staying responsible to balance school along with soccer.”

Lawler believes any girl in the club can achieve the same results if they enjoy being a good teammate. “Always try hard and compete but at the same time you should enjoy yourself and have fun,” added Lawler. “If you’re not having fun and are stressed out all the time and focus on yourself individually, it’s rarely going to work out. If you focus on the team and appreciate the time you have together, because it goes quickly, you will get where you want to be.”

SLSG congratulates the U18/19 ECNL team for the undefeated season and wishes the Class of 2018 all the best as they continue their academic and athletic careers next season.

SLSG’s Missouri ECNL RL Program has just concluded the Regional League Showcase in Sanford Florida this past weekend. The program brought three teams to participate in the showcase consisting of the 04/05, 06, and 07 age groups. This was a great opportunity for the players to compete with different teams from across the country and showcase their abilities to a number of various college programs totalling over 200 in attendance at the event. The three teams landed in Sanford on Thursday and each had one game on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Following the Friday slate of games our teams were able to watch the ECNL RL National Selection game in which Anna Beam (04/05) had the chance to represent SLSG and compete with the top players in the Regional League. Anna’s team was coached by SLSG’s RL Director and Coach Maggie Richard. Anna and Maggie came away with a 4-2 win on the night with all 3 of our age groups in attendance to support. The 04/05 age group had a great weekend with 3 wins over the 3 day span. On Thursday they battled to a 1-0 win over PWSI with an abundance of colleges in attendance on the day. They took the momentum into Saturday with a 2-0 win over FC Prime, and capped off the trip with a 3-2 win against FC Delco. It was a great sendoff for our senior class and the team was able to celebrate with a senior dinner on Saturday night to cap off the RL season. Over the course of the weekend the team was able to showcase their abilities individually and as a team. The 06 age group was able to come away with a 1-1-1 record on the trip, starting with a 2-2 draw over Susa FC off a last minute equalizer to steal a point on the opening day. On Saturday the group attempted to battle their way back against a 3-1 deficit and finished the game with a 3-2 loss against Alabama FC. They ended the trip on a high note beating Match Fit Academy 3-0 on Sunday. It was an overall successful weekend for the 06 age group. The 07 age group were unlucky to come out of the weekend with a draw and 2 losses. Facing 3 tough opponents during the showcase the group was unfortunate not to come away with a win, but showed they are able to compete with top teams and look forward to the playoffs this summer following the high school season. Overall it was a great experience for the players to experience such a special event put on by the ECNL. We would like to thank all the families and players for their commitment to the program this season and for making it such a great experience for everyone. We wish all of our players good luck this high school season.
