ST. LOUIS, MO - The SLSG Navy ECNL Program put in a fantastic performance this past weekend. For the first time in the program’s history, the U18/19, U17, U16, and U15 teams went undefeated against the Michigan Hawks and Michigan Hawks Magic teams.
Saturday, all four age groups played against the Michigan Hawks teams.
The U15’s took a first-half lead against the Hawks after Payton Buck cleverly clipped a bouncing ball over the keeper from distance. Later in the second half, the Hawks responded with a free-kick goal of their own. But the U15 team held on to the tie, earning a hard-fought point in the league.
Later in the day, the U16 team competed in a thrilling 3-3 match. Kayleigh McPherson opened the goal scoring for the game, with a great finish. As the game progressed, the Hawks fought back to take a 3-1 lead late into the second half. With just under ten minutes left, Audrey Goodyear and Langley Mayers combined to find Lucie Schwartz calmly inside the Hawks goal box. Schwartz was able to tuck away a cool finish to make the game 2-3. In what would be the last play of the game, Mattie Ohlsen was able to earn a free kick on top of the Hawks goal box. Langley Mayers stepped up to bury the resulting free-kick for the last kick of the game, tying the Hawks 3-3.
The U17 age group battled through an extremely difficult match, full of challenges tactically and physically. After a scoreless first half, the Navy ECNL team was awarded a penalty kick. Erin Connolly stepped up to tuck away her second goal from the spot this season. As the game wound down, the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick as well, with the game settling in a tie.
In the final game of the day, the U18’s capped off a historical weekend against the Hawks Black. Jess Larson scored the first goal of the match with a brilliant finish in tight on the goalkeeper. The Hawks then responded with a goal of their own, before Ashley Martinez was able to regain the lead. Again, the Hawks were able to tie the game this time at 2-2. But with about ten minutes left, Izzy Luebbert was able to tuck away a great finish to reclaim the lead. A great team defensive effort saw out the victory, capping off an undefeated first day.
Sunday’s matches were against the Michigan Hawks Magic teams.
The U15’s came out flying, with an early goal from Mia Devrouax. Tasneem Dizdarevic also contributed a goal to the scoreline, as well as Ki Kukan, who scored two goals. In the following game, both Lucie Schwartz and Alyssa Bockius combined to ensure the U16’s were victorious in their 2-0 win. Zoe Houston and Hannah Smith got on the scoresheet for a 2-0 victory for the U17’s as well. In the final game of the weekend, the U18’s rounded out a great day winning for the program. Annessa Shively, Riley Combs, and Jess Larson combined for a 3-0 win.
Following the phenomenal weekend, SLSG ECNL Director Ralph Richards had this to say “There is no doubt how proud I am of the girls' effort and the team performances on Saturday in all four ECNL games vs the Hawks. What makes the weekend more special was the response on Sunday knowing the workload the girls endured on Saturday. The girls' mentality was quite brilliant as far as staying focused and showing patience on breaking down very compact Hawks Magic groups.”
