SLSG-IL Unity Camp Recap
During the evenings of August 6th through August 8th, SLSG-IL hosted a Unity Camp for its existing members U7-U12 in preparation for the Unity Cup which SLSG-MO hosts for all members U7-U12. The Unity Camp, as Karley Thompson put it, “The Unity Camp gave the girls the opportunity to bond with their new team, have lots of fun and grow their love for the game. It was the perfect week of events to get everyone in the spirit of the fall SLSG soccer season!"
The Unity Camp was created to be exactly that. With the formation of new teams and players beginning their soccer career with Saint Louis Scott Gallagher – Illinois, we wanted to invite them out to the Unity Camp to get to know their new teammates and welcome those joining the club. When final registrations numbers came in, the staff at SLSG-IL were excited to see how many players had registered for the camp. “We had over 100 boys and 100 girls signed up, so we wanted to make sure it was something special for our members. The first day the coaches ran training stations focusing on dribbling and ball control. The second day we played a bit more, and the last day was a 4v4 tournament.”, said Joe Wyland – U6-U10 Boys and Girls Youth Age Group Director. Asked what he thought about the 4v4 tournament, Joe said “The trophy the kids won was the icing on the cake. The trophy which stands about 2 feet tall, was like the Stanley Cup. Every kid wanted to hold it and take pictures with it. Their smiles while holding the trophy was something I’ll never forget”
Reflecting on the camp Coach Alex Rosenberger said, “the Unity Camp was a perfect kick off to our soccer season. The week embodied everything our club stands for. Not only our shield values, but also community, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the Unity Camp was infectious. Smiles everywhere among coaches and athletes anxious to get on with the season. A perfect start by a very passionate group.”
A special shout out and thank you to all the staff and coaches that made the Unity Camp a memorable experience for our SLSG-IL players.
