Both the U15 NPL and U17 Classic boys teams traveled to Little Rock, AR this past weekend to compete in the Showcase of the South at Burns Park. “This was a good early-season event for us to get an additional look at the boys in a competitive setting, while also letting them get to know one another better by traveling as a team,” said U15 coach Beau Farrell. The weekend started with a 0-0 draw to the Mighty Bluebirds out of Arkansas. “Good first game of the season for us, especially in the second half,” said Farrell. “We were unlucky not to get one at some point during the second half, but for the first game of the year the staff was very pleased with the players performance.” The weekend got better from there, with the U15 NPLs defeating Arkansas United 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, and KC United Attack 3-0 on Sunday morning to finish the weekend 2-0-1.
The U17 Classic team faced off Saturday morning against the KCSC Black Stars, losing 5-0. They were again bested by the same score in the afternoon against a Futura FC team out of Western Missouri. “Cohesion and finding a style of play were our main goals on the weekend,” U17 Classic Coach Bill Berger said. “Despite what the scoresheets read, we were able to make progress in those areas.” The 17s finished out the weekend with a 5-1 loss against United Soccer Club on Sunday morning. “The boys never quit fighting and kept the atmosphere positive even late into the third game on Sunday,” said Berger. “With a collective attitude like that, there’s a foundation from which to build from.” Both groups begin league play in early March.
